What are Varicose Veins?

Blood carries oxygen all over the body through veins and arteries. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and heart, and veins carry the blood back to the heart to be re-oxygenated. When factors such as age and damage affect the ability of the veins to function properly serious vein disorders such as varicose veins can develop.

Varicose veins are distended veins beneath the skin. For a variety of reasons, they can no longer return the blood to the heart efficiently. As the blood builds up in the vein, it can pool in one place or even flow backward. This can cause veins that bulge from the skin and cause discomfort for the patient. “Spider veins” are a smaller version of varicose veins that are closer to the surface of the skin. Spider veins usually develop in the legs but can develop in other locations on the body, such as the face, arms, and chest.

What are Causes of Varicose Veins?

Inside of your veins, there are miniature flaps called valves that close after the blood passes through. These valves prevent blood from flowing back down the leg instead of up to the heart and lungs. If the valves cannot do their job, blood may collect in the vein below the valve. The collected blood causes the vein to enlarge. This condition is common. Unfortunately, there is a genetic predisposition to varicose veins. With age and prior injuries, even those who are not predisposed to varicose veins may see them develop.

What Should I do if I Develop Varicose Veins?
